Why Chinese Herbs Come as a Formula, Not One Herb at a Time

A formula built for your own body is a different thing from picking one herb off a shelf, and here's why that's the point.

Why Chinese Herbs Come as a Formula, Not One Herb at a Time

Walk into the dispensary at Acuherb Clinic and you'll see shelving stocked with herbal supplement bottles and boxes, the in-house herb shop where Dr. Helen Liu fills the formulas she prescribes. It's worth understanding why it works this way, because it's different from how most people think about herbal remedies.

Who's building the formula

Dr. Liu is NCCAOM certified in Chinese herbology on top of her acupuncture certification. She graduated from Hunan Province University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with a bachelor's degree in medicine in 1984, then spent three more years in a postgraduate program focused specifically on Chinese herbal medicine, and worked as a physician and teaching faculty at her own alma mater before ever practicing in the US. A formula from this clinic comes out of that training, not a general supplement catalog.

One person, one formula

In traditional Chinese medicine, herbal treatment isn't a matter of picking a single herb for a single symptom. Formulas are tailored to every individual's body condition and pathologic pattern, because people's constitutions are different, and so are the ways their conditions show up. Two people with what looks like the same complaint can walk out of Acuherb Clinic with two different formulas, because what's actually going on in their bodies isn't identical.

Where the herbs come from

The herbs used at Acuherb Clinic are collected from primitive mountain forests without industrial pollution. They're imported and inspected by US authorities before they reach the clinic. That matters, because herbal medicine has been the main form of treatment in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, and quality sourcing is part of what makes a formula something Dr. Liu is willing to put her name behind.

You don't have to stop your other medication

Patients often ask whether they need to discontinue current medications to take Chinese herbal medicine. They don't. It's a question Dr. Liu takes seriously, and the clinic's own position is direct: patients do not need to stop what they're already taking in order to add an herbal formula to their care.

What a course of treatment actually looks like

How many visits you'll need depends entirely on your health condition. For something simple, like a flu, one visit with three to five doses of herbs may be enough. Chronic disorders take longer, and treatment usually starts at one or two visits a week. There's no fixed timeline handed to every patient. It's built around what's actually going on with you.

What sits alongside the herbs

  • Cupping
  • Gua sha
  • Moxibustion
  • Tuina
  • Diet and lifestyle adjustment

Herbal formulas aren't the only tool in the room. Depending on what Dr. Liu is treating, she may also bring in cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, tuina, or changes to diet and daily habits, the wider set of methods traditional Chinese medicine uses alongside herbs and acupuncture.

Paying for herbs

One practical note worth knowing before your visit: herbal remedies are categorized as dietary supplements, which means they aren't covered by insurance, even if your acupuncture visit itself is billed through your plan. Dr. Liu is in-network with Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, JHU, United Health, and VA medical insurance for the clinical visit, but it's worth budgeting for the herbs separately.

What patients say

Vanna Keomisy, a Google reviewer, wrote: "Dr. Helen Liu is so helpful in her treatments. She truly cares about what's best for your health and listens to your needs. I highly recommend her for any acupuncture and medicinal herb treatments!" Acuherb Clinic carries a 5.0 star rating on Google across six reviews, all of them five stars.

Booking a consultation

A formula only gets built after Dr. Liu has actually talked with you about your condition, which is why the first step is always a visit, not a phone order. Acuherb Clinic is at 10304B Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City, open Monday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings, Tuesday and Friday until 5:00 pm, Wednesday afternoon into the evening, and every other Saturday, 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Call (410) 313-8226 to ask what a formula could look like for you before you commit to anything.

A formula built for you, from herbs sourced and inspected the way Dr. Liu insists on, isn't a quick fix off a shelf. It's closer to a prescription than a supplement aisle purchase, and that's exactly the point.
